Space Shuttle Discovery delivered the Expedition Two crew to the station and returned the Expedition One crew to Earth. The primary cargo for the mission was the Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM), with six racks for the U.S.Destiny Laboratory Module, delivered and installed onto the station during STS-98. The STS-102 crew installed Leonardo onto the International Space Station in order to unload its contents and then return it to Earth. There were also two extra-vehicular activitys (spacewalks) conducted to complete assembly operations. Mission Objectives for the first spacewalk was for astronauts Susan Helms and Jim Voss to move the shuttle docking port to make room for the MPLM and attach the Lab Cradle Assembly to the top of the lab. The assembly was to be used on STS-100 when the Canadarm2 Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) was attached to the station. On the second spacewalk, astronauts Andy Thomas and Paul Richards attached a stowage platform and coolant pump to the outside of the Destiny module.

George-Christopher

George Christopher (December 8, 1907 - September 14, 2000) was the 34th List of Mayors of San Francisco, California of San Francisco, California, California, serving in that office from January 1956 until January 1964. They were surrounded on all sides by friendly Belgic states, and their tribal capital was at Durocortum (Reims, France) the second largest oppidum of Gaul, on the Vesle. Linked with the Germans, they repeatedly engaged in warfare against the Parisii and the Senones. In Korean language, Korea is referred to as Joseon (,) in the North and Hanguk (,) in the South. The western name Korea (from Goryeo (,)) is a neutral name often used by both countries in international contexts. This article explains the historical evolution and modern usage of these names.
Ancient History
Historically speaking, Chosn (also romanized as Joseon meaning Land of the Morning Calm) referred to the northern area and Han (,) to the southern region in general. Until about 2000-3000 years ago, several ancient kingdoms in northern Korea had the name Joseon, including Go-Joseon, Wiman Joseon, and Gija Joseon. After the fall of Go-Joseon, some refugees settled in the south. Around the same time, several tribes were established in southern Korea, collectively called the Three Han (Samhan,), thus introducing the name Han. It is usually assumed that Joseon originates from the transliteration of the native name into Chinese characters. However, writing in 1985, the South Korean historian Yi Byeong-do suggested that Joseon came from the translation of Asadal (,), the capital of Go-Joseon (which doubled as a name for the state), into Chinese characters. Asadal (Asatar) has been analysed as asa, meaning morning, and tar, meaning land or mountain. There may be a legitimate connection there, as jo is the Chinese character for morning (asa), but the relationship between seon (, bright in this context) and tar is more problematic.
The Three Kingdoms
By the beginnning of the Common Era, northern Korea was controlled by the kingdom of Goguryeo (,). Soon after, the three southern Han tribal confederacies resolved into the kingdoms of Baekje (,), Silla (,), and the loose confederation of Gaya. Several centuries after the fall of the Baekjes and Goguryeos fall to Silla and Sillas subsequent fall to Goryeo, the Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) was written, which gave the collective name Three Kingdoms of Korea (Samguk,) to Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla.
Unified Silla
Baekje and Goguryeo came under Sillas control in the 660s, making Silla the first kingdom to rule most of the entire peninsula. Thus, Koreas name became Silla. The country is often referred to today by historians as Unified Silla (Tongil Silla,) to differentiate it from the Silla of the Three Kingdoms Period. During this period, Muslim traders brought the name Silla to the world outside the traditional East Asian sphere for the first time. Geographers of the Arab and Persian world, including ibn Khurdadhbih, al-Masudi, Dimashiki, al-Nuwairi, and al-Maqrizi, left records about Silla.
Goryeo
In the 930s, the new kingdom of Goryeo (,) conquered Silla. The name Goryeo (a shortened form of Goguryeo) was translated into Italian language as Cauli, the name Marco Polo used when mentioning the country in his Travels, perhaps derived from the Mandarin Chinese form Gaoli. From Cauli came the English language names Corea and the now more commonly used Korea (see Western names below).
Joseon
After Yi Seonggye founded the Joseon Dynasty in 1392, he renamed the country Joseon, reviving the old name. The countrys full name was Daejoseonguk (, Great Joseon Nation), a name that is almost never used today. In 1897, Emperor Gojong of Joseon became the first emperor of the newly formed Korean Empire (Daehan Jeguk,), or literally Great Han Empire, modifying the countrys old official name by replacing Joseon with Han and changing Guk (nation) to Jeguk (empire).
Japanese Colonial Period
When Korea came under Japanese Colonial Period control in 1910, the country reverted to the name Joseon (the official name being the Japanese Chosen). During this period, many different groups outside of Korea worked or fought for independence. One group was the Shanghai-based Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea (Daehan Minguk Imsi Jeongbu,), adopting the name Daehan Minguk (Republic of Korea, literally Great Han People-Nation), a modified form of Daehan Jeguk (Great Korean Empire).
After World War II
Korea became independent with Japans defeat in 1945. The country was then jointly Division of Korea into a Soviet Union occupation zone in the north and an United States occupation zone in the south. The non-Communism Shanghai group had more influence in the south, which in 1948 became the Republic of Korea, adopting the former provisional governments name of Daehan Minguk. Meanwhile, ex-Soviet Red Army major Kim Il-sungs Korean Workers Party had more influence in the north, which in 1948 became the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (Chosn Minjujui Inmin Konghwaguk,), adopting Joseon (Chosn), a name with ancient and northern connotations.
The Situation Today
Today, North Koreans use Chosn refer to Korea as a whole, and refer to the two countries specifically as Bukchosn (, North Chosn) and Namjosn (, South Chosn). In contrast, South Koreans call Korea Hanguk and refer to North Korea as Bukhan (, North Han) and South Korea as Namhan (, South Han). North Koreans never use Hanguk and South Koreans do not use Chosn (with a few exceptions, such as Chosun Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper). The Korean language is called Chosn or Chosnmal in the North and Hangugeo or Hangugmal in the South. Chosngl is the North Korean name for what the South Koreans call Hangul. The Korean Peninsula is called Chosn Pando in the North and Hanbando in the South. When writing in English language, a few authors write north and south in lowercase because they are not part of the countries official names, and because of the belief that Korea should be considered as one connected socio-cultural nation. (In the same vein, official maps in both countries usually do not show the Military Demarcation Line (Korea) that divides the two countries, giving the illusion that it is possible to travel freely back and forth between North and South.)
Chinese and Japanese names
Newspapers in the Peoples Republic of China tend to refer to North Korea as Chaoxian and to South Korea as Hanguo, similar to the situation in Japan, where North Korea is called Kita-Chosen (, North Chosn) and South Korea Kankoku (Han Nation). The Republic of China in Taiwan, on the other hand, refers to North Korean as Beihan (North Han) and South Korean as Nanhan (South Han). In Japan, the Korean language is most frequently refered to as Kankokugo meaning language of the Han Nation. However, when NHK broadcasts a language instruction program for Korean, the language is referred to as Hangulgo meaning language of the Hangul writing system. This term is not used in ordinary Japanese, but was selected as a compromise to placate both nations. See kotobagari.
Western names
Both North and South Korea use the name Korea (or its equivalent in other western languages) when referring to their countries in English or other western languages. The name Goryeo (the source of Korea) has therefore come back into fashion in Korean as an alternative, more or less neutral name for Korea. Thus, Russian and Central Asian citizens of Korean descent call themselves Goryeo people to avoid the North-South conflict. More recently, Koria (, a back-translation from English) has also been used. In English, until the end of the 19th century, the name Corea was used almost exclusively, with Korea only coming into common use at the turn of the 20th century. This has given rise to a widespread ideas that says that the name Korea was favored by the Japanese around the turn of the century. Since Japan was after Corea in alphabetical order, Japanese nationalists would have decided to favor the upper-case C into a K, thus changing Corea into Korea in order to gain alphabetical supremacy. However, Korea was also used along with Corea in English-language documents very early in very limited amounts. The Japanese-modification theory, while widely in favour among nationalists, is dismissed as an urban legend by most Japanese.

Joshua-Nkomo

Joshua Nkomo (1918 July 1, 1999) was a Zimbabwe nationalist leader, an Ndebele, and the leader and founder of the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union (ZAPU). He was born to black missionary teachers in Matabeleland and educated in South Africa, where he met Nelson Mandela and other regional nationalist leaders at Fort Hare University. After returning to Bulawayo in 1948, he became a trade unionist for black railway workers. He founded the National Democratic Party (NDP), and in 1960, the year British prime minister Harold Macmillan spoke of the wind of change blowing through Africa, Robert Mugabe joined him. The NDP was banned by Ian Smiths white minority government, and it was subsequently replaced by the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union (ZAPU), also founded by Nkomo and Mugabe, in 1962, itself immediately banned. ZAPU split along ethnic grounds a year after its formation, with Robert Mugabe breaking away with the Shona majority, forming, with Ndabaningi Sithole and Herbert Chitepo, the Zimbabwe African National Union, leaving ZAPU as a mostly Ndebele organisation. Nkomo was detained in 1964, with fellow revolutionaries Mugabe and Sithole, until 1974, when they were released due to pressure from South African president B.J. Vorster. He went to Zambia to fight for Zimbabwean independence. A majority rule government of Zimbabwe Rhodesia led by Abel Muzorewa was formed in 1979 between Ian Smith and Ndabaningi Sitholes ZANU, which by now had also split from Robert Mugabes more military ZANU faction. However, the civil war waged by Nkomo and Mugabe continued unabated, and Britain and the USA did not lift sanctions on the country. Britain persuaded all parties to come to Lancaster House Agreement in September 1979 to work out a constitution and the basis for fresh elections. Mugabe and Nkomo shared a delegation, call the Patriotic Front (PF), at the negotiations chaired by Lord Carrington. Elections were held in 1980, and to most observers surprise Nkomos ZAPU lost in a landslide to Mugabes ZANU. Nkomo was offered the ceremonial post of President, but declined. He was appointed to the cabinet, but in 1982 was accused of plotting a coup. Mugabe unleashed the notorious Fifth Brigade upon Nkomos Matabeleland homeland, in an operation termed Gukurahundi. After the Gukurahundi, in 1987 Nkomo was reconciled with Mugabe and two parties merged into Zanu-PF, leaving Zimbabwe as effectively a one-party state, and leading some Ndebeles to accuse Nkomo of selling out. In a powerless post, and with his health failing, his influence declined until his death in 1999.

Chicago-(2002-movie)

Chicago is a movie musical released in 2002 about celebrity and money in Jazz History 1920s to 1950s 1920s Chicago. spoiler Velma Kelly is a nightclub star whose celebrity is only increased by her double murder of her adulterous husband and her sister. Roxie Hart is a nobody who dreams of the fame of and wealth of a singing career. When she shoots her abusive lover, who lied about his ability to get her a job as a performer, she is sent to murderess row. There she meets Velma Kelly. Facing Capital-punishment, Roxie hires Billy Flynn, Chicagos best lawyer, who promises to turn her case into a celebrity murder trial and get her acquitted. Flynn manipulates the press and the public and Roxie becomes famous. When Billy recognizes Roxies potential, Roxie and Velma become locked in a rivalry to outdo each other in stardom. The show was inspired by the musical Chicago (musical) which enjoyed a successful revival in the mid-1990s. The theater productions musical numbers are staged as vaudeville pieces. This made the picture somewhat difficult to adapt from stage to screen. The movie version interpreted this by presenting the musical numbers as occurring in Roxies fantasies. The movie starred Rene Zellweger (Roxie Hart), Queen Latifah (Matron Mama Morton), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma Kelly), Richard Gere (Billy Flynn), John C. Reilly (Amos Hart), and Christine Baranski (Mary Sunshine) and was directed by Rob Marshall. It won six Academy Awards including Academy Award for Best Picture, and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones. All principal actors did their own singing and dancing in the film. Zeta-Jones and Latifah previously had professional music careers and Reilly and Baranski had had musical theater experience. Gere was the most experienced of the leading cast in that area, and required only minimal rehearsal, however, Zellweger had never sung or danced professionally. Gere did, however, require tap dance instruction prior to shooting his court room tapdance routine. The film was released December 10 2002 and runs 113 minutes.
Songs
And All That Jazz
Funny Honey
When Youre Good to Mama
Cell Block Tango
All I Care About
We Both Reached for the Gun
Roxie
I Cant Do It Alone
Mister Cellophane
Razzle Dazzle
Nowadays (Roxie)
Nowadays
I Move On An additional song, Class, performed by Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones was filmed, but it was cut from the movie. He had previously been a collegiate star in both baseball and American football. An All-American halfback as a junior at the University of California, Berkeley (1948), Jensen scored a touchdown in the teams 20-14 loss to Northwestern University in the 1949 in sports Rose Bowl (game). He was also an All-American pitcher, helping California win the inaugural College World Series in 1947 in sports, defeating a Yale University team featuring future President of the United States George H.W. Bush in the final. In 1950 Jensen left college after his junior year to play in the majors with the Yankees as a backup for Joe DiMaggio. He was sent to the Senators during the 1952 season, and was traded to the Red Sox in 1954. Making the Major League Baseball All-Star Game squad three times and winning a Gold Glove at rightfielder, Jensen earned the MLB Most Valuable Player award honors in 1958 in sports, when he Batting average.286, with 35 home runs and a league-leading 116 run batted in. He also led the league in RBI in 1955 (116) and 1959 (112), in Triple (baseball) in 1956 (11), and in stolen bases in 1954 (22). In 1960, Jensen announced his retirement from baseball, primarily because of an intense fear of flying. As teams had increasingly turned to air travel in the 1950s, he had unsuccessfully sought to combat this aversion, aided considerably by Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, who arranged for therapy treatments. Once baseball expanded to the west coast in 1958, and with further league expansion and constant air travel foreseen, these difficulties became virtually insurmountable. Jensen returned to play in 1961, but frustrated by a sub-par season, he retired again for good. In his career Jensen batted.279, with 199 home runs, 929 RBI, 810 Run (baseball statistics), 1463 Hit (baseball statistics),259 Double (baseball), 45 triples, 143 stolen bases, and a.369 on base percentage in 1438 games played. He later coached baseball at California and the University of Nevada, Reno and was a minor league baseball manager (baseball). Jackie Jensen died in Charlottesville, Virginia at the age of 55. He was selected to the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2000 in sports. It is responsible for the collection of Value-added tax, Customs Duties, Excise Duties, and other indirect taxes such as Air Passenger Duty, Climate Change Levy, Insurance Premium Tax, Landfill Tax and Aggregates Levy. It is also responsible for managing the import and export of goods and services into the UK. HM Customs and Excise officers also guard the borders of the United Kingdom from smugglers and illegal immigrants, although their duties in respect of people smuggling are to be transferred to the Serious Organised Crime Agency. Customs officers are a common sight at entry points in to the UK, their insignia include a portcullis. However, officers have authority throughout the country, including the powers of entry to premises and of arrest.
Customs
The Board of Customs has a very long history. Originally, the term customs meant any customary payments or dues of any kind (for example, to the king, or a bishop, or the church), but later became restricted to duties payable to the king on the import or export of goods. The centralised English customs system can be traced to the Winchester Assize of 1203-4, in the reign of King John, from which time customs were to be collected and paid to the State Treasury. Legislation concerning customs can be traced to King Edward I of England. Under the nova custuma in 1275, Collectors of Customs were appointed by Royal patent and, in 1298, custodes custumae were appointed in certain ports to collect customs for the Crown. The first Customs officers were appointed in 1294, and later on included Geoffrey Chaucer and Richard Whittington (aka Dick Whittington). A Board of Customs was effectively created by ordinance on 21 January 1643, under which the regulation of the collection of customs was entrusted to a parliamentary committee.
Excise
The Board of Excise is not so ancient. Excise duties are inland duties levied on articles at the time of their manufacture, such as alcoholic drinks and tobacco, but duties have also been levied on salt, paper and glass. A Board of Excise was established by the Long Parliament, and Excise Duties first levied, in 1643. The Board of Excise was merged to the existing Board of Taxes and Board of Stamps to create the new Board of Inland Revenue in 1849. Famous Excise Officers include Thomas Paine.
Customs and Excise
The combined Board of Customs and Excise was formed in 1909 by the transfer of responsibility for Excise from the Inland Revenue. HM Customs and Excise is not responsible for collecting direct taxes, this is the job of the Inland Revenue. In March 2004, the ODonnell review called for the merger of Customs and Excise with Inland Revenue, in the 2004 Budget, Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced that the merger would go ahead. The new Department will be called HM Revenue and Customs.

Children-of-the-Mind

Children of the Mind is the fourth book of Orson Scott Cards popular science fiction series begun with Enders Game, on the path that focuses on Ender Wiggin himself. Despite tying up the loose ends from Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide, and exploring various related philosophical avenues, it was criticized by both critics and fans for being too much of a departure from what was expected of the Ender sequence.
Backstory
spoiler Andrew Wiggin, a military genius chosen in Enders Game to defend Earth against the alien race of Bugger (buggers), later to become a speaker for the dead in the novel Speaker for the Dead, traveled to the colony planet Lusitania in that novel, befriended a family of scientists under considerable psychological trauma, and fell in love with the widowed mother. He has also chosen this planet as the planet to allow his hive queen cocoon, the last surviving member of the bugger race he annihilated in Enders Game, to hatch. Enders family befriended the pequeninos, a second sentient alien race and, contrary to orders from Starways Congress, begin teaching them human technology. Crucial to the pequeninos life cycle is the descolada virus, which infects alien species and kills everything it cannot mutate to its own needs. After the pequeninos kill a colonist and Starways Congress discovers that the humans have been teaching the pequeninos human technology, Starways Congress orders two of the colonists to a distant world to stand trial. As the length of the trip would mean the two accused would never see their family alive again, regardless of what sentence was passed, the colonists balk and refuse to send them. On discovering this insurrection, and also discovering the descoladas continued fight to subvert the methods used to contain it, Starways Congress orders the planet destroyed. In Xenocide, Jane, a third, disembodied alien life form who lives in the ansible networks which allow instantaneous interplanetary communication, discovers that while transporting Ender in a spacecraft she can move the spacecraft completely outside the known universe and back in to a different point anywhere at all, also instantaneously. But Congress has already sent the Lusitania fleet to destroy the planet, even though its known to hold a sentient alien species, and any attempt she makes to block their arrival will be discovered. Nonetheless she attempts to slow their arrival, Congress discovers the interference and begins to shut down the ansible network, thinking of her as a virus which must be purged. Jane realizes that she was Outside the universe before being called into being inside, and that by travelling and remaining outside for awhile, a being can call into existence new beings according to what they desire to exist. Jane has drifted apart from Ender as a result of Enders shutting off a communication one day, brusquely and without thought, and become close to Miro, the physically disabled and brain-damaged son of Enders wife, Novinha. Miro was crippled in an attempt to help the pequeninos near the end of Speaker for the Dead. Ela, one of Novinhas daughters, is a scientist trying to discover a cure for the descolada virus. Jane and Novinhas family decide that Ela must travel Outside the universe to try to create the cure for the descolada, because Jane is now as close to Miro as to Ender, both Miro and Ender travel with her. While outside the universe, Miro imagines himself in his body as it was before he was crippled, he jumps to a new body and his old one dissoves into dust, and Ender unwittingly calls into being manifestations of his altruistic sister Valentine Wiggin and his cruel but politically-minded brother Peter Wiggin. Ela successfully creates a virus which causes the effects the pequeninos need in their life cycle without attempting to kill everything it cant convert.
Children of the Mind
At the start of Children of the Mind, Jane is taking Formics, humans, and pequeninos to distant habitable planets to colonize them, but is losing her memories and concentration as a result of the vast ansible and computer network being shut down. If she is to live, she must find a way to transfer herself to a different body. Enders wife has left him to join a religious order, Ender now controls his own body as well as young Valentines and Peters, but his own body is suffering as a result of his split attention. Peter is off to distant worlds to try to convince people diplomatically that destroying the planet would constitute a second xenocide, and Valentine and Miro are spending all available time looking for additional habitable planets. The Lusitania fleet is expected to arrive outside the planet and destroy it within a few weeks. Alan Clark was the eldest son of Kenneth Clark. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he studied law. He did not practice however, and instead became a military historian. His first book, The Donkeys (1961), was a revisionism history of British involvement in the Great War, which was well received by the public but which greatly irritated the British Army. However, in more recent years this work has been condemned by some historians for being too one-sided and failing to recognise the intelligence and humanity of the large majority of World War One generals. It was the inspiration for the popular pacifist Musical theater Oh What a Lovely War, though Clark himself was not pleased with the adaptation. He produced several more respected studies of the World War I and Second World War, before becoming involved in politics. Clark entered British House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton in 1974 and served in various junior ministerial posts at the departments of Employment, Trade and Ministry of Defence during the Margaret Thatcher governments of the 1980s. He was an outspoken maverick with strong views on Animal rights, Unionists (Ireland), Racism and Social class. Although personally liked by Margaret Thatcher, she never entrusted him with high office and he left Parliament in 1992 following her fall from power. His admission at the Matrix Churchill court case that he had been economical with the actualitee in answer to parlimentary questions over export licenses to Iraq caused the collapse of the trial and triggered the Scott Inquiry into Arms-for-Iraq which contributed to the decline in the John Major administration. At the same time he has cited in a divorce case in South Africa where it was revealed he had affairs with both the wife and his daughter. Clarks wife responded with the famous line Well what do you expect when you sleep with below stairs types. He then published his political and personal diaries, which caused a minor scandal by their candid descriptions of senior Conservative politicians such as Michael Heseltine, Douglas Hurd and Kenneth Clarke. He became bored with life outside of politics however, and returned to Parliament as member for Kensington and Chelsea in the UK general election, 1997. He died in 1999 of a brain tumor. To date he is the only Member of Parliament to be accused of being drunk at the despatch box. In 1983 while at Employment he was making a reading of a bill in the Commons after a heavy lunch with Ian Gow. As the complexities of the bill were too unclear to him to answer questions, it was Claire Short who made the accusation. While the Goverment benches were furious at the accusation Clark later admitted he was drunk. After his death, his seat was contested and won by Michael Portillo. A recent BBC TV serialisation of his Diaries re-ignited the controversy surrounding their original publication and once again brought his memory back into the UK press and media.
Quotes
On the sinking of the ARA General Belgrano
So what does it matter where it was when it was hit? We could have sunk it if itd been tied up on the quayside in a neutral port and everyone would still have been delighted. To refugees from the Uganda of Idi Amin, who held residence rights in the UK:
You cannot come here because you are not white. On Christmas:
I only can properly enjoy Christmas carol services if I am having an illicit affair with someone in the congregation. Why is this? Perhaps because they are essentially pagan, not Christian, celebrations. On Douglas Hurd:
I fell into conversation with Douglas. His is a split personality. deux he is delightful, clever, funny, observant, dryly cynical. But get him anywhere near display mode, particularly if there are officials around and he might as well have a corn cob up his arse. Pompous, trite, high-sounding, cautiously guarded. On reform of the British Army, as Ministry of Defence:
I want to fire the whole lot. Instantly. Out, out. No District commands, no golden bowlers, nothing. Out.... If I could, Id do what Stalin did to Mikhail Nikolayevich Tukhachevsky.
Books
The Donkeys, A History of the British Expeditionary Force in 1915 (1961)
The Fall Of Crete (1963)
Barbarossa, The Russo-German Conflict 1941-45 (1965)
Diaries (three volumes 1993-2002)
The Tories (1999)
Aces High, The War in the Air Over the Western Front 1914-18 (1999)
Suicide of Empires, Battles on the Eastern Front 1914-18 (1999)
Backfire, A Passion for Cars and Motoring (2001)

USS-Astoria

At least three ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Astoria, after the town of Astoria, Oregon.
An Astoria was laid down in 1867, but renamed USS Omaha (1869) prior to commissioning.
The first USS Astoria (1917) was seized by US Customs at the outbreak of World War I.
The second USS Astoria (CA-34) was a heavy cruiser commissioned in 1934 and lost in the World War II Battle of Savo Island, 1942.
The third USS Astoria (CL-90) was a light cruiser commissioned 1944, active in the war, and decommissioned in 1949. disambig

Frank-Newcomb

Frank H. Newcomb (10 November 1846 - 20 February 1934) was a Commodore (rank) in the Revenue Cutter Service. Commodore Newcomb was most famous for his heroic actions at the Battle of Cardenas during the Spanish American War. Newcomb was born in Boston, Massachusetts. First Lieutenant Frank Newcomb was in command of the USRC Hudson when the Spanish American War broke out. Newcombs ship entered the war as a US Navy auxiliary. Hudson had been retrofitted with two cannons and a small machine gun. She was more of a tugboat than a combat vessel. On May 11, 1898, in one of the first actions off the coast of Cuba, Captain Frank Newcomb distinguished himself and his ship in the Battle of Cardenas. The United States Navy torpedo boat USS Winslow and the USRC Hudson had been shelling Spanish positions. Winslow had been hit multiple times. Half her compliment was dead and her Captain gravely wounded. Newcomb ordered Hudson to tow Winslow out of harms way. Under heavy fire, she did just that, despite nearly floundering on shoals trying to fast a rope to Hudson. Without a doubt, Newcombs actions saved USS Winslow from destruction and possible capture. Three members of Winslows crew received Medal of Honor for their actions. Because of the United States Revenue Cutter Services status at the time, William McKinley felt that Newcomb could not be nominated for a Medal of Honor as he was an officer of the United States Revenue Cutter Service. Instead, Congress instructed that a special Congressional Gold Medal be struck for First Lieutenant Frank H. Newcomb on May 3, 1900 in Public Law 31 Stat. 717. It was the only such medal struck during the Spanish American War. At the time, it was thought to be an honor equivalent to the Medal of Honor. Commodore Newcomb died in Los Angeles, California. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery with his wife Rose Prioleau Newcomb. There was a United States Navy destroyer named after Commodore Newcomb, USS Newcomb (DD-586).

Galatia,-Kansas

Galatia is a city located in Barton County, Kansas. The planets ecosystem is fairly undamaged since Liarian technology remain fairyly primitive and thus few pollutants have been released into the atmosphere. Liarians are a short, hairy and stocky race. They are a peaceful race with a technology level similar to the medieval ages of Earth. Liarians are descended from ancient liarian wizards that were responsible for sealing away Maligore on the Muiranthias on Earth. Lerigot is a direct descendant of those wizards. Divatox, a space pirate, came to Liaria in order to capture the wizard Lerigot to free Maligore.

Dolores-\"LaLa\"-Brooks

Dolores Brooks, born, June 20, 1947 in Brooklyn, NY was a member of the girl group The Crystals. It is perhaps best known for the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, Brooklyns version of the Arc de Triomphe. It is also the site of the Bailey Fountain, and a monument to John F. Kennedy, as well as statues of American-Civil-War Civil-War-leaders Gouverneur Kemble Warren and Henry Warner Slocum, along with busts of notable Brooklyn citizens Henry Maxwell Tablet and Alexander J.C. Skene.
History of the plaza
The Plaza (as it was originally known) was concieved by its designers, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, simply as a grand entrance to the Park. It was meant as a gateway, to seperate the noisy city from the calm nature of the Park. Olmsted and Vauxs design included only a single-spout fountain surrounded by berms(earth embankments). The berms were covered in heavy plantings, shielding the local apartment buildings and the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library from the noisy traffic circle that has developed. In 1889, John H. Duncan designer of Grants Tomb in Manhattan designed the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch in a classical style similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. William Tecumseh Sherman laid the cornerstone of the arch on October 30, 1889, President Grover Cleveland presided over the unveiling on October 21, 1892. The Arch gained its monumental statues nine years later. They were first suggested by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White as part of a plan to formalize the plaza in the spirit of the City Beautiful movement. The Park Commissioner, Frank Squire, liked the ideas, and engaged Frederick MacMonnies in 1894 to design three sculptural groupings for the Arch, the Quadriga, The Spirit of the Army, and The Spirit of the Navy. The Quadriga resides at the top and depicts the lady Columbia, an allegorical representation of the United States, riding in a chariot drawn by two horses. Two winged Victory figures, each leading a horse, trumpets Columbias arrival. The lower pedestals facing the park hold the The Spirit of the Army group and the The Spirit of the Navy group. Installation of the groups began four years later, starting with the Quadriga on December 4, 1898, and finishing with the Navy group on April 13, 1901. The work took nearly seven years to complete, about twice as long as the construction of the arch itself. Just north of the Arch, and away from Prospect Park, stands Bailey Fountain, the fourth fountain to occupy the site. The original fountain, featuring a lone jet of water, was replaced in 1873 by Calvert Vauxs Plaza Fountain which had gas-lit colored horizontal and vertical water jets. The Electric Fountain, designed by electrical engineer F.W. Darlington in 1897, featured 19 automatic focusing electric lights with a dancing display of water jets controlled by a conductor. The Electric Fountain was removed during the 1915 construction of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company under the Plaza. The Bailey Fountain was built in 1932 by architect Edgerton Swarthout and sculptor Eugene Savage. Named after Brooklyn-based financier and philanthropist Frank Bailey (1865-1953), he funded it as a memorial to his wife Mary Louise. It features an elaborate grouping of allegorical and mythical figures that includes the god of water Neptune and a pair of female nudes representing Wisdom and Felicity. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument received landmark designation in 1973, in 1975, all of Grand Army Plaza became a New York City historic landmark. In 1976 the Victory figure on the Quadriga on top of the Arch fell out of its chariot. The Arch was restored in 1980 and again in 2000. For the past several years a Green Market is held on the Plaza in front of Prospect Park every Saturday from 8 AM to 4 PM. On weekends a free trolley service runs between 12 Noon and 6 PM from Grand Army Plaza with stops at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Boathouse, the Wollman Rink and the Brooklyn Museum. The Grand Army Plaza (IRT Eastern Parkway Line station) subway station is on the north end of the Plaza and furnishes transportation to the site and the nearby park. It is named after its builder, firearm and typewriter magnate Lyman C. Smith. It was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River from its completion in 1914 until the Space Needle overtook it in 1962. It remained the tallest office building west of the Mississippi River until the Exxon Building (Houston) was built in 1963
History
In 1909, Smith planned to build a 14-story building in Seattle. His son, Burns Lyman Smith, convinced him to build instead a much taller skyscraper to gain publicity. Construction began in 1910. Although Smith did not live to see it, the building was completed in 1914, when it was the tallest office building in the world outside of New York City. It had 42 floors totaling 158 meters (522 feet). Shortly after its completion, the buildings superintendent added a flagpole to the top for the buildings July 4 opening. In 1962, the Space Needle was completed. The Space Needle has largely replaced the Smith Tower as the symbol of Seattle. Ivar Haglund of Ivars restaurant fame bought the tower for $1.8 million in 1976. The Samis Foundation acquired the tower in 1996. It has owned the tower ever since. The building has been renovated twice, in 1986 and in 1999. Seeking a classy atmosphere, high-tech companies flocked to the Smith Tower, which sports fiber-optic wiring, in recent years. The burst of the Dot-com Thinning the herd hurt the Smith Tower by raising its vacancy rate to 26.1%, twice Seattles commercial vacancy rate, as of December 21, 2001. The Walt Disney Internet Group, for example, now occupies four floors instead of seven.
Description
The Smith Tower is an example of neoclassical architecture. Its outer skin is granite on the first and second floors, and terra cotta on the rest. It has been washed only once since its construction, in 1976, because it remains remarkably clean without regular washing. The building is the last on the West Coast to have live elevator operators. The Otis Elevator Company provided the elevators, which have brass surfaces. The doors are latticed, so a rider can see into each hallway and through the glass walls in front of each office. The Chinese Room is on the 35th floor of the tower, the same level as the observatory. The furniture and the handcarved ceiling were gifts from the Empress of China. They include the famous Wishing Chair. It is said that a single woman who sits in the chair will marry within a year. The legend came true for Smiths daughter, who married in the Chinese Room itself.

Society-of-Hispanic-Professional-Engineers

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles.
